Basiskurs A1 / Basic Course (Niveau A1, 4 Credits)

Dieser Kurs mit 4 SWS ist überwiegend kommunikativ ausgerichtet. Die Studierenden lernen, in alltäglichen Lebenssituationen verbal  adäquat zu kommunizieren, zum Beispiel sich kennenlernen, einkaufen, essen und trinken, Termine  machen, über Tagesabläufe, Studium, Sehenswürdigkeiten in Europa etc. sprechen. Erste wichtige Elemente der deutschen Grammatik werden sukzessiv integriert.

Basiskurs A2 / Basic Course (Niveau A2, 4 Credits)

Die Studierenden lernen – basierend auf den Kenntnissen der Grundstufe 1 – in Alltagssituationen kommunikativ zu handeln (Themen: Wohnen, Urlaub, Gesundheit, Essen, Einkauf, Freizeit usw.). Grundlegende Elemente der deutschen Grammatik werden sukzessiv integriert. Alle vier Fertigkeiten (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen) werden geübt.

Hörverstehen und Sprechen (Niveau B1, 2 Credits)

Ob in Vorlesungen oder Seminaren - die Fähigkeit, Inhalte gut zu verstehen und wiedergeben zu können, ist für den Erfolg eines Studiums überaus wichtig. Um Gespräche und wissenschaftliche Inhalte nachvollziehen zu können, ist ein breiter Wortschatz unabdingbar. Aus diesem Grund werden wir nicht nur Texte hören und besprechen, sondern auch immer wieder neuen Wortschatz erarbeiten, der die Basis eines jeden guten Hörverstehens ist.

Aber auch Alltagsthemen werden besprochen, die für ein Leben in Deutschland wichtig sind.

In diesem Basiskurs geht es darum, die Fertigkeiten Lesen, Schreiben, Hören und Sprechen zu trainieren. Anhand des Lehrbuches werden alle vier Fertigkeiten geübt, alte Grammatik wird wiederholt sowie neue Grammatik mit Hilfe von Lernspielen erklärt. Der Unterricht findet auf Deutsch statt. Wissenschaftssprache Deutsch - Einführung und Training (Niveau B2, 4 Credits)

In diesem Kurs beschäftigen wir uns mit sprachlichen Strukturen und kommunikativen Situationen, die für den Einsatz der deutschen Sprache in den Wissenschaften typisch sind. Charakteristische sprachliche Eigenheiten der deutschen Wissenschaftssprache und typische kommunikative Situationen werden anhand von exemplarischen Texten und Situationen eingeübt. Nach Möglichkeit trainieren wir mit Fachtexten aus den Studiengängen der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, sofern diese für alle verständlich sind. Sprechen und Schreiben für Studium und Beruf (B2.1, 2 Credits)

In diesem Kurs stehen die Kernkompetenzen „Sprechen“ und „Schreiben“ im Vordergrund. 50% des Kurses soll anhand von studienrelevanten Themen und Situationen gesprochen werden. In welchen Situationen ist eine Kommunikation unausweichlich? Wie verhält man sich in Seminaren oder auf einer wichtigen Sitzung? In vielen Fällen ist es jedoch auch notwendig, schriftlich zu antworten, z.B. per E-Mail oder Brief. Aus diesem Grund beschäftigt sich die zweite Hälfte des Kurses mit dem Abfassen von Texten, die im Studium und/oder im Beruf gebraucht werden.

Deutsch zu lernen ist nicht leicht! Da hilft es, wenn Lesetexte und Audios, Sprechübungen und Schreibaufgaben inhaltlich interessant und lerntechnisch gut aufgebaut sind. In unserem Kursbuch sind Ihre Erfahrungen als Eingewanderte rund um die Sprache thematisch – von Heimweh über Formen des Lernens und Phänomene der Stimme hin zu Kommunikation. Diskutieren und Präsentieren (Niveau B2.2, 2 Credits)

Diskutieren und Präsentieren sind im Studium von zentraler Bedeutung. Im Kurs wird beides intensiv besprochen bzw. geübt. Durch eine Vorababfrage werden die Wünsche der Teilnehmer*innen erfasst und passgenau ins Lehrkonzept eingebaut. So ist es möglich, inhaltliche Schwerpunkte zu legen, um die Zielsetzungen aller Kursteilnehmer*innen so gut es geht zu erfüllen. Mit Hilfe von Redemitteln werden Diskussions- und Präsentationssituationen eingeübt sowie Rede- und Sprechverhalten untersucht, nicht zuletzt auch, um gutes „Feedback“ geben zu können. Ziel ist es, die eigene Körpersprache bei der Präsentation Ihrer Vorträge zu analysieren und zu verbessern, um den eigenen „Präsentationsstil“ zu finden und entspannt diskutieren zu können.

Schreiben wissenschaftlicher Texte (Niveau C1, 2 Credits)

Arbeiten Sie an einer Hausarbeit in Ihrem Fach, an Ihrer Bachelor- oder Masterarbeit, vielleicht an Ihrer Promotion? Dieser Kurs unterstützt Sie dabei, Ihren Laborbericht, Ihre Abschlussarbeit oder Promotion sachgerecht aufzubauen und zu schreiben.

Ein wichtiger Baustein ist der Besuch der Universitätsbibliothek, an der wir Recherchieren, Zitieren, Paraphrasieren und Plagiatsvermeidung lernen.

Ziel des Kurses ist, dass Sie die Merkmale der Wissenschaftssprache Deutsch in Stil und Textstruktur kennen und auf Ihr Thema/Ihre Forschungsarbeit anwenden können. Um das zu erreichen, bringen Sie bitte Ihr Schreibprojekt mit.

Feuilleton und Literatur - Diskussion und schriftliche Analyse (C1, 2 Credits)

Dieser Kurs richtet sich an Studierende, die über ihr naturwissenschaftlich-technisches Studium hinaus an Literatur und Feuilletontexten interessiert sind. Im Kurs werden sowohl kleinere literarische Texte und Gedichte als auch Texte aus Zeitschriften und der Tagespresse diskutiert und analysiert. Zudem sollen die im Unterricht behandelten Texte nach unterschiedlichen Aspekten schriftlich beleuchtet und interpretiert werden, d.h., dass während des Semesters 5 schriftliche Hausaufgaben angefertigt werden sollen, die benotet werden. Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit stehen im Zentrum dieses Kurses, dessen Ziel es ist, die Teilnehmer*innen mit geisteswissenschaftlichen Texten vertraut zu machen. Wir werden in diesem Semester andere Themen und Texte besprechen, so dass Studierende, die im SS 2019 an diesem Kurs teilgenommen haben, sich bei Interesse wieder einschreiben können, da es zu keinen Wiederholungen kommen wird.

Leistungsnachweis: Fünf schriftliche Hausaufgaben (50%) und mündliche Prüfung (50%)

Deutsch für Maschinenbauingenieure (Niveau C1, 2 Credits)

Dieser Kurs wendet sich an Studierende und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter des Faches Maschinenbaus, aber auch anderer naturwissenschaftlich-technischer Fachrichtungen, die ihre sprachlichen Fähigkeiten gezielt für das Fach verbessern wollen. In this integrated skills course, students will practice the language needed in academic discourse: They will

• practice listening to lectures and taking notes;
• improve their speaking skills by discussing the topics and presenting information to the group;
• hone their reading skills and focus on the structure of academic texts by reading excerpts from academic textbooks from various disciplines
• expand their academic vocabulary and command of academic language structures and thus improve their skill in writing academic essays,

Throughout the course, special emphasis will be put on academic language and on the skills students need to succeed in an academic environment in English.

Listening and Speaking (Niveau B2, 2 Credits)

In this course, you will improve your listening and speaking skills. Using authentic audio and video material (radio talk shows, interviews, documentaries, etc.), the course offers you extensive listening practice, both in class and at home via Moodle. You will learn listening strategies and practice listening for information, interpreting what you have heard, and predicting what will be said. The course also provides you with the opportunity to enhance your speaking skills and practice the new vocabulary by discussing challenging current topics at length in class and viewing them from different angles. Vocabulary expansion will be an important element in the course, and the discussions will encourage both fluency and accuracy.

Discussing and Debating (Niveau B2, 2 Credits)

This course is designed to help students develop their argumentative and critical thinking skills in English. It focuses on expressing and defending a standpoint in a debate, evaluating evidence used to support a motion, as well as considering opposing viewpoints.
Students will learn conversational strategies such as agreeing and disagreeing, interrupting and asking for clarification by watching and analysing documentary videos and exploring topical issues from the Economist debates etc.  Impromptu speaking and Socratic Circles are some of the approaches used to actively practise and hone the skills of reasoning and argumentation.The interactive nature of the course offers plenty of opportunities to expand relevant vocabulary as well as to enhance fluency and confidence.

Business Communication (Niveau B2, 2 Credits)

This course is designed to help students enhance their communicative effectiveness in a modern work environment. It focuses on developing speaking skills in telephoning on the job, participating in meetings and discussions and holding basic negotiations. You will practise your analytical and creative skills by finding solutions to problems in job-related situations. Upon successful completion of the course, you will know how to present a case at a business meeting, negotiate a pay rise or deal with problems across departments, among others. The interactive group activities, role-plays, business simulations and discussions on case studies give ample opportunities to students to consolidate the business grammar and vocabulary introduced in the course and hone the essential language skills they need for their career.

Effective Communication on Campus (Niveau B2, 2 Credits) - NEW!

Being able to communicate effectively can be crucial for students on a number of levels. While informal communication is essential for making new friends and establishing a network, formal communication plays a vital role in making progress in academia and preparing students for the world of work. This course will begin by investigating general communication techniques before applying these techniques in a variety of situations, such as being interviewed for a room in a shared flat, taking part in an informed debate, or collaborating with other students to achieve a common goal. Due to the communicative nature of the course, students should be prepared to take part in extensive speaking exercises in class.

Leistungsnachweis:
Regular attendance (max. 3 missed classes per semester). Active participation in class. Groupwork: planning and leading a discussion in class. Oral exam at the end of the semester.

Developing Writing Skills (Niveau B2, 2 Credits)

Good writing is much more than accurate spelling and appropriate grammar. This course will help you identify, explore and manipulate the functional elements of language. In addition to exploring the textual conventions around common writing types and styles such as academic writing, CVs & cover letters, scientific reports and essays, this course will give students the opportunity to practise and expand their knowledge of sentence structures, paragraph coherence and overall text organization. In addition to in-depth writing practice, guidance will also be given on how to avoid typical writing errors, in order to develop a more accurate and sophisticated style.

Business Writing (Niveau B2, 2 Credits)

Workshop: Socializing in English (Niveau B2, 1 Credit)

Being able to connect with others in business or private situations is an important skill for everyone. Networking and socializing with colleagues, clients, customers, partners, work groups, etc. is an essential part of business. This interactive workshop will teach you what to say and how to communicate in key social situations. You will learn how to:

• strike up conversations and keep them going
• politely end a conversation
• introduce yourself
• handle inappropriate questions and comments
• avoid "conversation killers" and cultural taboos
• be an active listener

Leistungsnachweis:
Attendance required. Oral grade based on language use in class and a simulation. (This workshop is *not* part of the English for Leadership Certificate)

English for Social Scientists (Niveau B2, 3 Credits)

This course aims to help you improve your reading and listening comprehension as well as your oral and written skills in English within the fields of political science and sociology. Thus, there will be a strong emphasis on the acquisition and use of context-relevant vocabulary. The basis for class discussions will be readings taken from British and American textbooks, professional journals and leading newspapers or magazines. These texts will present key concepts and key issues. Audio and video material will be presented in class or on the Moodle learning platform.

This course is not recommended for 1st semester students.

A Language Proficiency Certificate can be issued on successful completion of this course.

The course will cover some of the most important aspects of screenwriting - from generating and pitching ideas, drafting an outline, developing characters to writing dialogue and scene descriptions. Advanced English for Academic Purposes (Niveau C1, 2 Credits)

This course will give students the opportunity to improve and broaden their academic language skills. With a particular emphasis on science and technology, we will focus on aspects of academic English such as: stance, voice, tenor and register. Students will learn how to analyze the academic language in texts in their own fields of study and put the newly acquired vocabulary, collocations and sentence patterns into practice in their own writing. Participants will take part in discussions and group presentations to enhance their academic speaking skills. They will also practice listening to authentic material such as scientific podcasts and lectures.

Please note: A language proficiency certificate can be issued upon successful completion of this course.

This course will systematically take you through the key stages of analyzing the audience, introducing and signposting, illustrating your presentation, etc. You will learn verbal and non-verbal skills and enhance your knowledge of the vocabulary you need in order to give powerful presentations. In the second half of the course, you will have the opportunity to put your newly-acquired skills into practice by giving two presentations, on which you will receive feedback from both your peers and the instructor.

This course focuses on the fundamentals of the art of negotiation. Students will study the Harvard method of negotiation and learn the language necessary to negotiate effectively, as well as practise handling that language skillfully. This course is particularly beneficial for students in higher semesters who are getting ready to write their final thesis or dissertation. It provides an opportunity to acquire the academic writing skills and language needed for further university study and research. Aimed at students in all disciplines, the course covers a range of tasks, including: writing summaries and syntheses of sources, using evidence to support claims, applying appropriate referencing conventions when citing sources in a bibliography. Students will focus on a formal style involving both grammar and vocabulary of particular importance in academic writing. Time will also be given over to exploring the writing process and critiquing each other’s work.

Over the course of the semester, students will put their newly-acquired skills into practice by composing a number of different types of short writings where they will need to summarize, paraphrase, quote, and cite entire texts and/or text passages. All of these assignments will receive comments from other students and the instructor and will need to be revised before they are collected in a final portfolio.

Writing for Study and Research (Niveau C1/C2, 3 Credits)

This course complements the “Introduction to Academic Writing” course, although these courses may be taken in any order. Both are particularly suited to students in higher semesters, who are preparing to write their final thesis or dissertation. The course concentrates primarily on the writing of research articles/papers, and sections thereof, within the fields of its participants. An analytical approach will be taken to identify discipline-specific elements, which will then be applied to develop participants' own writing. Workshop: Intercultural Sensitivity Traning (Niveau C1/C2, 1 Credit)

In many professions, it is necessary to interact with colleagues, partners or customers who come from different countries and backgrounds. This workshop will sensitize participants to cultural differences, offer an introduction to intercultural communication, and provide tips for communicating effectively across cultures. During this interactive training, students will look beneath the surface at what culture actually is and how it influences our perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors. They will experience what it feels like not to speak the language of the country one is in, and they will learn ways to avoid judging and rejecting the behavior of people different from themselves.

Sie sind ein internationaler Student? Sie interessieren sich für die „typisch deutschen“ kulturellen Besonderheiten, und wie diese den Alltag, das Studium und die Arbeit beeinflussen?

Im Mittelpunkt des interkulturellen Trainings stehen Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten beim Studium und beim Arbeiten in Deutschland. Sie lernen:

• wie Leben, Studium und Arbeiten in Deutschland funktionieren,
• welche Werte den Deutschen wirklich wichtig sind und warum,
• wie Sie in interkulturell gemischten Studien- und Arbeitsgruppen erfolgreich sind,
• wie Sie am besten mit Kommiliton/innen, Professor/innen und Arbeitgebern kommunizieren.

Leistungsanforderung: Ein Sprachniveau Deutsch B1 ist Mindestvoraussetzung für die Teilnahme. Für für den Erwerb von Credit Points muss bis zum 31.01.2020 ein Bericht (wenigstens 500 Wörter) über den Kurs im Sprachenzentrum eingereicht werden (a.hettiger@tu-braunschweig.de). Sie sollten darin reflektieren, was Sie gelernt haben, welche Inhalte und Übungen Ihnen am besten gefallen haben und was Sie vielleicht selbst umsetzen wollen.
