        This course is for students who have no or very little knowledge of Arabic.

        Native speakers of this language may not take this foreign language course.

        This course is communicative and action-oriented, includes a systematic treatment of the grammar as well as the systematic development of vocabulary. All four language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing) are practised. The learning tasks are designed so that the students can use the Chinese language in authentic communicative situations from the very beginning and thus also learn how to communicate successfully in intercultural interactions.

        The course is aimed at "false beginners" or students who want to quickly acquire a basic knowledge of English.

        Course content

        This English A2.1 course aims to improve all language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing). Great importance is also attached to the systematic development of basic grammar and vocabulary.
        In this course, students will study the following:

        - grammar: tenses (present and past tenses), questions, articles, likes and preferences
        - countries and nationalities, describing living conditions and everyday activities, comparing cities then and now, talking about jobs and working conditions, requesting information, giving instructions, making suggestions
        - writing: formal and informal emails, an essay about a city in the past and now

        Learning outcomes

        Students achieve English proficiency in all skills equivalent to level A2.1 within one semester.

        This course is designed to help students develop their argumentative and critical thinking skills in English. It focuses on expressing and defending a standpoint in a debate, evaluating evidence used to support a motion, as well as considering opposing viewpoints.
        Students will learn conversational strategies such as agreeing and disagreeing, interrupting and asking for clarification by watching and analysing documentary videos and exploring topical issues from the Economist debates among others.
        Impromptu speaking and Socratic Circles are some of the approaches used to actively practise and hone the skills of reasoning and argumentation. The interactive nature of the course offers plenty of opportunities to expand relevant vocabulary as well as to enhance fluency and confidence.

        Course content

        Working across cultures is evermore in demand in today’s university and work environment. Achieving top performance for internationally-based tasks and projects is at the hands of good management. This course will touch on challenges faced and work on skills needed to manage such projects with success. ‘Practice makes perfect’, so we will strongly focus on project-oriented communication skills involving: introducing project topic, networking relationships, influencing the team, solving timing issues effectively, teleconferencing, negotiating solutions, promoting advantages, presenting final results.
        In this course, students will also explore characteristics of the ideal project manager, the virtual challenge, develop a stakeholder analysis as well as discuss risk and conflict management. Professional skills such as giving feedback, addressing conflicts in emails, developing Gantt charts and understanding other project management tools while building intercultural competences working through selected case studies will also be addressed. Students will acquire special phrases and vocabulary of the field; grammar will be reviewed as needed. An individual action plan should be maintained by each participant, thus reviewing earlier scenarios, hard-won vocabulary, and implementing newly acquired knowledge and skills to a given project/case. At the end of this course you should be able to establish and introduce your own project in a Gantt chart and present this to the class.

        Course content

        This course is designed for Environmental Science and Engineering students who want to improve their English language skills while investigating and debating the impacts of human development (industrial, commercial, and residential) on air, land, and water resources. The focus is not only going to be on the causes of current environmental challenges but also on ideas for potential solutions to existing local and global problems. Authentic English texts and media will be used in group discussions and to craft written responses. Individual presentations will allow students to report on an issue of personal interest.

        This semester we are going to take a closer look at the urban environment and are going to envision the city of the future. By 2050, 70 to 80 percent of the world's population, which by then is going to be almost 10 billion, will be living in cities.         This course is designed to help students develop their argumentative and critical thinking skills in English. It focuses on expressing and defending a standpoint in a debate, evaluating evidence used to support a motion, as well as considering opposing viewpoints.
        Students will learn conversational strategies such as agreeing and disagreeing, interrupting and asking for clarification by watching and analysing documentary videos and exploring topical issues from the Economist debates among others.
        Impromptu speaking and Socratic Circles are some of the approaches used to actively practise and hone the skills of reasoning and argumentation. The interactive nature of the course offers plenty of opportunities to expand relevant vocabulary as well as to enhance fluency and confidence.

        Course content

        Working across cultures is evermore in demand in today’s university and work environment. Achieving top performance for internationally-based tasks and projects is at the hands of good management. This course will touch on challenges faced and work on skills needed to manage such projects with success. ‘Practice makes perfect’, so we will strongly focus on project-oriented communication skills involving: introducing project topic, networking relationships, influencing the team, solving timing issues effectively, teleconferencing, negotiating solutions, promoting advantages, presenting final results.
        In this course, students will also explore characteristics of the ideal project manager, the virtual challenge, develop a stakeholder analysis as well as discuss risk and conflict management. Professional skills such as giving feedback, addressing conflicts in emails, developing Gantt charts and understanding other project management tools while building intercultural competences working through selected case studies will also be addressed. Students will acquire special phrases and vocabulary of the field; grammar will be reviewed as needed. An individual action plan should be maintained by each participant, thus reviewing earlier scenarios, hard-won vocabulary, and implementing newly acquired knowledge and skills to a given project/case. At the end of this course you should be able to establish and introduce your own project in a Gantt chart and present this to the class.

        Course content

        This course is designed for Environmental Science and Engineering students who want to improve their English language skills while investigating and debating the impacts of human development (industrial, commercial, and residential) on air, land, and water resources. The focus is not only going to be on the causes of current environmental challenges but also on ideas for potential solutions to existing local and global problems. Authentic English texts and media will be used in group discussions and to craft written responses. Individual presentations will allow students to report on an issue of personal interest.

        This semester we are going to take a closer look at the urban environment and are going to envision the city of the future. By 2050, 70 to 80 percent of the world's population, which by then is going to be almost 10 billion, will be living in cities. To get our cities ready for the future, we need to not only solve today's environmental problems, such as air pollution and climate change, but we need to try to also anticipate what other new challenges the future may bring. We will explore various topics through classroom debates, small group work, listening and reading exercises, as well as presentations, and we will work together towards our common goal of developing a more sustainable and livable city of the future.

        This course is for anyone who wants to improve their speaking skills in English in a more casual and creative way. We will train your speaking skills through, for example, role plays, table reads, storytelling, improv games, and other activities. We will also train your listening and reading comprehension by, for example, reading, watching and talking about dialogues from feature films, TV series, and stage plays.

        Course content

        A study at the Stanford School of Business tracked MBAs 10 years after they graduated. The result? Their grades had no bearing on their success ‑ but their ability to converse with others did. Being able to connect with others through small talk is a skill needed by every professional in all fields when networking and interacting with colleagues, clients, customers, partners, work groups, etc. In this interactive workshop, you will practice:
        - making small talk in key social and business situations
        - introducing yourself and describing your work/studies differently according to the situation
        - introducing people to each other

        In addition, you will learn:
        - acceptable topics for small talk and topics to avoid
        - how to start a conversation and keep it going with ease
        - tips for easily remembering names
        - the role of culture in small talk

        Learning outcomes

        Participants will learn to make small talk in English.

        Students with a placement of at least C1.
        Students who are placed at C2 are expected to have a higher level of language proficiency.

        Contemporary Issues in Science and Technology adopts an interactive, communicative approach, helping students further develop their passive and active English language abilities by engaging with issues/subjects drawn from scientific/technical fields of both current relevance and particular interest/necessity to the participants. Using authentic texts and audiovisual material, the course trains reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. At the conclusion of the semester, students practice presenting on a topic of special interest to them.

        Students improve both their receptive and productive skills in relation to technical language content at a high linguistic level (C1/C2).

        The focus of this course is on oral skills: Listening comprehension and listening production.

        Learning outcomes

        At the end of this course, participants will be able to understand different types of audio and video documents and to express themselves orally in French in different contexts (informal, formal and academic).

        Successful completion of the courses "Français B1", "Français B1.2" or the achievement of at least 61 points in the placement test, which allows access to French courses at level B2.

This intercultural training focuses on the basics of intercultural communication and sensitization for intercultural situations. Examples are taken from the Chinese cultural area.

        After finishing this workshop the participants will have gain insights into the Chinese culture and have trained and expanded their intercultural competences and sensitivity.

        In this course almost all 18 lessons of the textbook will be covered. Only lessons 2, 11 and 12 will probably be omitted.

        This course is for students who have successfully completed the course in Japanese A1.3&A1.4 (in the winter term 2023/2024 or in the summer term 2024) or who have already acquired prior knowledge equivalent to approximately the first half of the expected A2 level competences.

        The syllabus of this course is more or less the same as that of the course "WS23-ja-a2.5-02-01 Japanese A2.5&A2.6" from winter semester 2023/2024, because the syllabus of the previous courses became progressively more intensive.

        Learning outcomes

        At the end of this course, the participants will have acquired university-related language skills and intercultural knowledge that fully correspond to the expected competencies of the A1 level.

        Prerequisites and co-requisites

        If you have attended a Spanish course before, you must take the placement test.
        Only people who have no previous knowledge of Spanish or who have placed at A1 level in the test (0-19 points) can enrol in this course.

        WS24-es-a1-02-06: This course takes place online. You'll get an email on how to log on to the course shortly before the start date.
        The use of a microphone and camera is mandatory. For this it is necessary that you have an internet-enabled device (laptop, tablet or similar - not a smartphone!) with a microphone, speakers and camera and a good internet connection. Should a regular attendence without microfone be noticed, your participation cannot be recognised!

Grammar, vocabulary and intercultural communication are trained to the same extent, and all four language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing) are practised. The learning tasks are designed so that the students can use the Spanish language in authentic communicative situations from the very beginning. The lessons are structured according to the flipped classroom principle.

        Contenidos del curso

        En este curso se trabajan los capítulos 1-6 del manual.

        Aunque se recomienda hacer la parte A antes que la parte B, se puede cambiar el orden o hacerlas de forma independiente la una de la otra.

        Objetivos didácticos

        Al final del curso los participantes habrán adquirido conocimientos lingüísticos e interculturales en un contexto de educación superior que se corresponden con la mitad de las competencias previstas para el nivel B2.

        Haber superado el curso B1.2 o haber obtenido en el test de nivel un resultado corresondiente al nivel B2 (60-74 puntos).

        Actividades didácticas y métodos de enseñanza

        El curso está orientado a la comunicación. La gramática, el vocabulario y la comunicación intercultural son trabajados por igual y se practican las cuatro destrezas (leer, escuchar, hablar y escribir). Las tareas de aprendizaje están diseñadas de forma que desde el principio los participantes puedan utilizar el español en situaciones reales de comunicación.
