Algunos de estos temas son el sistema universitario, la búsqueda de alojamiento o de trabajo, el uso de los medios de transporte y de comunicación, la apertura de una cuenta en el banco o la contratación de una tarifa móvil. Además, se fomentará la conversación entre las parejas o los grupos bilingües con temas como los medios de comunicación, los viajes, las costumbres, las amistades o la migración.

Objetivos didácticos

Al final de este curso los participantes habrán mejorado tanto su alemán como sus conocimientos sobre la cultura alemana y habrán adquirido una visión global de este país. Todo esto les facilitará la integración en la vida cotidiana y universitaria de Alemania.

Course content

This English A2.1 course aims to improve all language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing). Great importance is also attached to the systematic development of basic grammar and vocabulary.
In this course, students will study the following:

- grammar: tenses (present and past tenses), questions, articles, likes and preferences
- countries and nationalities, describing living conditions and everyday activities, comparing cities then and now, talking about jobs and working conditions, requesting information, giving instructions, making suggestions
- writing: formal and informal emails, a short city guide

Course content

Using authentic audio and video material, the course offers you extensive listening practice, both in class and at home via Moodle. You will learn listening strategies and practice listening for information, interpreting what you have heard, and predicting what will be said. The course also provides you with the opportunity to enhance your speaking skills by discussing current topics in class and in small groups. Students will also learn how to give short presentations, on which they will receive feedback both from their peers and the instructor.

Discussing and Debating (Level B2, 2 Credits)

Course content

This course is designed to help students develop their argumentative and critical thinking skills in English. It focuses on expressing and defending a standpoint in a debate, evaluating evidence used to support a motion, as well as considering opposing viewpoints.
Students will learn conversational strategies such as agreeing and disagreeing, interrupting and asking for clarification by watching and analysing documentary videos and exploring topical issues from the Economist debates among others.
Impromptu speaking and Socratic Circles are some of the approaches used to actively practise and hone the skills of reasoning and argumentation. The interactive nature of the course offers plenty of opportunities to expand relevant vocabulary as well as to enhance fluency and confidence.

Learning outcomes

Students develop their argumentative and critical thinking skills in English. They can take part in debates and discussions and defend their standpoints.

Students who have successfully completed level B1.2 or have been placed at B2 and wish to improve their discussion and argumentation skills in English.

Course content

This course is designed to help students enhance their communicative effectiveness in a modern work environment. It focuses on developing speaking skills in telephoning on the job, participating in meetings and discussions and holding basic negotiations. You will practise your analytical and creative skills by finding solutions to problems in job-related situations. The interactive group activities, role-plays, business simulations and discussions on case studies give ample opportunities to students to consolidate the business grammar and vocabulary introduced in the course and hone the essential language skills they need for their career.

Course content

This course aims to develop students’ reading and writing skills in a university context. Students will read a variety of interesting texts while utilizing strategies such as skimming and scanning, reading for detail, and speed reading. Furthermore, students will practice identifying standards of texts (i.e. text organization, paragraph and sentence structure, coherence and cohesion, stance, tone) and applying this knowledge to the production of their own writing. In addition, students will refine writing skills such as summarizing, paraphrasing, and note-taking in the course.

Course content

Using the right tone and demonstrating competent writing skills in workplace communication can be a great advantage to your career. In this course, students will learn how to write a range of clear, concise and effective emails, letters and documents, including cover letters, resumes, personal statements, reports, meeting minutes, etc. Students will practice structuring these documents and choosing the appropriate style, tone and level of politeness in neutral and formal workplace communications. Sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation will be dealt with as needed, based on the students' own written work.

Course content

Working across cultures is evermore in demand in today’s university and work environment. Achieving top performance for internationally-based tasks and projects is at the hands of good management. This course will touch on challenges faced and work on skills needed to manage such projects with success. ‘Practice makes perfect’, so we will strongly focus on project-oriented communication skills involving: introducing project topic, networking relationships, influencing the team, solving timing issues effectively, teleconferencing, negotiating solutions, promoting advantages, presenting final results.
In this course, students will also explore characteristics of the ideal project manager, the virtual challenge, develop a stakeholder analysis as well as discuss risk and conflict management. Professional skills such as giving feedback, addressing conflicts in emails, developing Gantt charts and understanding other project management tools while building intercultural competences working through selected case studies will also be addressed. Students will acquire special phrases and vocabulary of the field; grammar will be reviewed as needed. An individual action plan should be maintained by each participant, thus reviewing earlier scenarios, hard-won vocabulary, and implementing newly acquired knowledge and skills to a given project/case. At the end of this course you should be able to establish and introduce your own project in a Gantt chart and present this to the class.

Course content

This intercultural communication course accompanies the Intercultural Partner Project in winter semester 23/24, which is a tandem project between students of TU Braunschweig and students of the partner university University of Rhode Island. In this course, students explore key concepts of intercultural communication together and develop an awareness of cultural differences and similarities through simulations and the analysis of critical incidents. They also build communication skills that enable them to interact effectively and appropriately in intercultural situations. In addition, students meet regularly with different American tandem partners and take part in an excursion.

Learning outcomes

Students acquire knowledge of their own and other cultures as well as background knowledge of intercultural communication and competence, also in relation to the university context. They can analyse intercultural communication situations and interact effectively and appropriately.

Students who have at least a B2 level in English, have been in Germany since the primary school, are interested in intercultural communication and exchange with North American students and/or are planning to study abroad in the USA or Canada.

Course content

This course is designed for Environmental Science and Engineering students who want to improve their English language skills while investigating and debating the impacts of human development (industrial, commercial, and residential) on air, land, and water resources. The focus is not only going to be on the causes of current environmental challenges but also on ideas for potential solutions to existing local and global problems. Authentic English texts and media will be used in group discussions and to craft written responses. Individual presentations will allow students to report on an issue of personal interest.

This semester we are going to take a closer look at the urban environment and are going to envision the city of the future. By 2050, 70 to 80 percent of the world's population, which by then is going to be almost 10 billion, will be living in cities. To get our cities ready for the future, we need to not only solve today's environmental problems, such as air pollution and climate change, but we need to try to also anticipate what other new challenges the future may bring. We will explore various topics through classroom debates, small group work, listening and reading exercises, as well as presentations, and we will work together towards our common goal of developing a more sustainable and livable city of the future.

This is a multifaceted course which uses authentic materials (including A.I.) to provide the basis for interaction, discussion, study and linguistic development within this fast-developing and ever-changing subject. A hybrid approach is taken as students deal with the technical and social issues that arise from the continuing emergence and growing importance of A.I. in engineering and beyond. Focus is given to issues such as A.I. decision-making and legal/ethical implications, human-machine interaction in professional and academic life, A.I. in manufacturing and industrial settings and A.I. and the future of work.

Course content

Working across cultures is evermore in demand in today’s university and work environment. Achieving top performance for internationally-based tasks and projects is at the hands of good management. This course will touch on challenges faced and work on skills needed to manage such projects with success. ‘Practice makes perfect’, so we will strongly focus on project-oriented communication skills involving: introducing project topic, networking relationships, influencing the team, solving timing issues effectively, teleconferencing, negotiating solutions, promoting advantages, presenting final results.
In this course, students will also explore characteristics of the ideal project manager, the virtual challenge, develop a stakeholder analysis as well as discuss risk and conflict management. Professional skills such as giving feedback, addressing conflicts in emails, developing Gantt charts and understanding other project management tools while building intercultural competences working through selected case studies will also be addressed. Students will acquire special phrases and vocabulary of the field; grammar will be reviewed as needed. An individual action plan should be maintained by each participant, thus reviewing earlier scenarios, hard-won vocabulary, and implementing newly acquired knowledge and skills to a given project/case. At the end of this course you should be able to establish and introduce your own project in a Gantt chart and present this to the class.

Course content

This intercultural communication course accompanies the Intercultural Partner Project in winter semester 23/24, which is a tandem project between students of TU Braunschweig and students of the partner university University of Rhode Island. In this course, students explore key concepts of intercultural communication together and develop an awareness of cultural differences and similarities through simulations and the analysis of critical incidents. They also build communication skills that enable them to interact effectively and appropriately in intercultural situations. In addition, students meet regularly with different American tandem partners and take part in an excursion.

Learning outcomes

Students acquire knowledge of their own and other cultures as well as background knowledge of intercultural communication and competence, also in relation to the university context. They can analyse intercultural communication situations and interact effectively and appropriately.

Course content

This course is designed for Environmental Science and Engineering students who want to improve their English language skills while investigating and debating the impacts of human development (industrial, commercial, and residential) on air, land, and water resources. The focus is not only going to be on the causes of current environmental challenges but also on ideas for potential solutions to existing local and global problems. Authentic English texts and media will be used in group discussions and to craft written responses. Individual presentations will allow students to report on an issue of personal interest.

This semester we are going to take a closer look at the urban environment and are going to envision the city of the future. By 2050, 70 to 80 percent of the world's population, which by then is going to be almost 10 billion, will be living in cities. To get our cities ready for the future, we need to not only solve today's environmental problems, such as air pollution and climate change, but we need to try to also anticipate what other new challenges the future may bring. We will explore various topics through classroom debates, small group work, listening and reading exercises, as well as presentations, and we will work together towards our common goal of developing a more sustainable and livable city of the future.

Topic-related vocabulary, interactive discussion of relevant subjects and the elements of architecture and civil engineering make up the focus of this course. From materials to construction to design to processes and projects, this course focuses on expanding linguistic skills within the contexts of architecture and civil engineering. You will have the opportunity to practice presenting in a secure environment with 360* feedback (*that is, feedback both from the lecturer and fellow students). This course is for anyone who wants to improve their speaking skills in English in a more casual and creative way. We will train your speaking skills through, for example, role plays, table reads, storytelling, improv games, and other activities. We will also train your listening and reading comprehension by, for example, reading, watching and talking about dialogues from feature films, TV series, and stage plays.

Your final grade will be based on continuous assessment. The oral grade you receive will be based on your active participation in class as well as a final oral exercise (50%). Your listening and reading skills will be assessed over the course of the semester through a series of short listening and reading exercises (40%). A short vocabulary test will be given at the end of the semester to assess your newly acquired vocabulary skills (10%).

Course content

This course is particularly beneficial for students in higher semesters who are getting ready to write their final thesis or dissertation. It provides an opportunity to acquire the academic writing skills and language needed for further university study and research. Aimed at students in all disciplines, the course covers a range of tasks, including: writing summaries and syntheses of sources, using evidence to support claims, applying appropriate referencing conventions when citing sources in a bibliography. Students will focus on a formal style involving both grammar and vocabulary of particular importance in academic writing. Time will also be given over to exploring the writing process and critiquing each other’s work.

Over the course of the semester, students will put their newly-acquired skills into practice by composing a number of different types of short writings where they will need to summarize, paraphrase, quote, and cite entire texts and/or text passages. All of these assignments will receive comments from other students and the instructor and will need to be revised before they are collected in a final portfolio.

Contemporary Issues in Science and Technology takes an interactive, communicative approach to help students further develop their linguistic abilities while dealing with subjects both relevant to the current times and drawn from the interests of the students. Articles from digital contemporary professional journals and research are introduced alongside authentic, contemporary audiovisual material, allowing students to sharpen speaking, listening, writing and reading skills and expand their range of vocabulary. Course content

In many professions, it is necessary to interact with colleagues, partners or customers who come from different countries and backgrounds. This workshop will sensitize you to cultural differences, offer an introduction to intercultural communication, and provide tips for communicating effectively across cultures. During this interactive training, you will look beneath the surface at what culture actually is and how it influences our perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors. You will experience what it feels like not to speak the language of the country you are in, and you will learn ways to avoid judging and rejecting the behavior of people different from yourself.

Learning outcomes

Participants will have an insight into intercultural communication and develop an understanding of how culture can influence communication and behaviour.

Course content

Contemporary Issues in Science and Technology takes an interactive, communicative approach to help students further develop their linguistic abilities while dealing with subjects both relevant to the current times and drawn from the interests of the students. Articles from digital contemporary professional journals and research are introduced alongside authentic, contemporary audiovisual material, allowing students to sharpen speaking, listening, writing and reading skills and expand their range of vocabulary. Example issues may include topics such as bioengineering, smart cities, carbon sequestration, lithium mining, additive manufacturing – the list goes on…but students also have input on which topics will be covered during the semester.

Learning outcomes

Students improve both their receptive and productive skills in relation to technical language content at a high linguistic level (C1/C2).

This course uses authentic material from a variety of sources to encourage students to investigate current events in the various fields of social science. Students will not only improve their English skills, but also learn to assess global developments in terms of their relevance to contemporary research in the social sciences. A strong focus is placed on critical thinking, and students will become proficient in analysing perspectives and detecting bias (conscious and unconscious) in both written and spoken English.

Le cours vise à développer les capacités de communication. Dans ce cours, nous nous pencherons sur cette France d'aujourd'hui afin de mieux comprendre, communiquer, étudier, travailler et vivre avec les Français.

Les thèmes abordés seront notamment les suivants :
- la géographie ;
- la population ;
- les institutions ;
- l'économie et la politique ;
- la culture ;
- la France et l'Allemagne

Objectifs du cours

À la fin de ce semestre, les participantes et participants de ce cours auront affiné leurs connaissances sur la France et ses citoyens et auront débattu sur des sujets de société qui divisent actuellement la société française.

En plus de l'acquision de connaissances culturelles et interculturelles, les participantes et participants de ce cours pourront améliorer leurs compétences langagières, à l'oral comme à l'écrit, et seront à même de travailler avec des documents authentiques (écrits, audio et vidéo).
